What oil is good for mountain bike chain maintenance?

For the maintenance of mountain bike chains, special chain oil should be used. This type of oil is divided into three types: wet, waxy and dry.
1. Wet chain oil has the highest viscosity and excellent waterproof performance. It does not need to be applied frequently. It is especially suitable for riders who love challenges, long-distance riding and complex road conditions.
But it should be noted that it is more likely to absorb dust and may make the newly cleaned chain dirty again.

2. Waxy chain oil contains paraffin ingredients to enhance protection. Its waterproof and viscosity properties are between dry and wet, which is very suitable for users who pursue chain cleanliness.

3. Dry chain oil is based on silicone oil and is combined with anti-extrusion agent. Although it is slightly less waterproof, it is not easy to get dusty. It is suitable for riders who often ride on urban roads and do not want to wash the chain frequently.

  • Before applying chain oil, you should first use an old cloth to thoroughly clean the chain surface, chain links, tension wheel and flywheel, and avoid using degreasing or strong acid and alkali cleaners.
  • After cleaning, wait for 5 minutes before applying oil. Be careful not to let the oil drip onto the chain to prevent it from affecting the flywheel.
  • After applying oil, wait for another 5 minutes for the oil to penetrate, then rotate the transmission system several times and wipe off excess grease with a dry cloth.

In addition, in addition to these three special oils, you can also choose special lubricants for bicycle chains, wax lubricants, or sewing machine oil, car transmission oil, etc. as alternatives. Among them, wax lubricants need to be replenished regularly, while oil lubricants are easy to get dusty, so you need to clean the remaining oil on the surface of the chain frequently. When cleaning the chain daily, you can add washing powder to hot water, wash it, and apply a layer of vegetable oil for protection.
The use of these lubricants will not have a negative impact on the maintenance of the chain.

In addition, do you think the bicycle chain can still be ridden after rusting?
In fact, the bicycle chain can still be ridden after rusting, but it is recommended to treat it first.
To remove rust from the chain, use a brush or rag to clean the dust and dirt on the chain.
Next, apply lubricating oil to keep the chain lubricated and prevent further rust.
If the chain is severely corroded, it is recommended to replace it with a new one to ensure the normal use of the bicycle.
