Sprocket type
The various types of sprockets have different diameters (the thickness around the center plate, except for the teeth).
According to the American National Standards Institute, there are four main types:
Type A sprocket:
These sprockets are just plates. They don't have any thickness.
Type B sprocket:
These sprockets have thickness on only one side.
C-type sprocket:
These sprockets have the same diameter on both sides.
C-type offset/D-type sprockets:
This sprocket is asymmetrical. It has different diameters on both sides.
