Motorcycle chain and sprocket repair

Maintenance and adjustment are the most critical factors affecting the life of chains and sprockets. Keeping the chain clean and well lubricated is essential to ensure that it is not covered by surface rust and reaches its full potential. Regularly lubricating your chain (every 300 miles for sealed chains, every 100 miles for unsealed chains or after riding in wet weather) will ensure that the most common chain problems can be avoided, such as:

Excessive wear of pins (shortened chain life)

Rough contact with the sprocket (increased noise)

Rigid link (reduce chain mileage)

Your chain should be lubricated between the outer link and inner link to prevent elongation, and lubricated between the bushing and inner plate to reduce noise and prevent roller wear. All modern chain lubricants are very good, but if we try not to apply too much lubricant on the chain, and lubricate the chain when it is warm after riding, we can avoid the annoying lubricant "throwing out" because Chain lubricating oil is easier to reach all parts of the chain.

Things to remember

A few other things to keep in mind are to ensure that your wheels are positioned correctly and the sprockets are aligned for maximum service life. Misaligned sprockets will increase the noise of the transmission system, increase wear, and sometimes create tight spots in the chain.

Your chain adjustment is also a factor. A chain that is too tight will increase the wear of the sprocket, chain joints and bearings, while a chain that is too loose will increase the wear of the chain, but it will also produce a "whip" effect in the chain, causing it to break. Ensuring we have the correct chain tension (this will be in your manual or workshop manual) will ensure correct operation and optimal performance.
